Dig in: clues to curbing antibiotic resistance

Bacteria that naturally live in the soil have a vast collection of genes to fight off antibiotics, but they are much less likely to share these genes than infectious bacteria, a new study at the School of Medicine reveals. Shown is senior author Gautam Dantas, PhD.

Josh Whitman named new athletics director

Josh Whitman has been named the new director of athletics at WUSTL. Provost H. Holden Thorp, PhD, made the announcement. Whitman, who starts Aug. 1, comes here from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He will succeed John Schael, who is retiring after 36 years.

Two teams share $25,000 Discovery Competition top prize

A project to provide low-cost eyeglasses for people in the developing world and one to develop a cell-death detector will share $25,000 to further develop their projects as winners of the 2014 Discovery Competition. The School of Engineering & Applied Science created the competition in 2012.

Grad student co-directs film about the game of Go

“The Surrounding Game” is a documentary film about the game of Go co-directed by WUSTL graduate student Cole Pruitt. It follows two of America’s top young players. The story explores a larger question: Can a game this subtle and difficult, which has been pursued as a fine art in Asia for millennia, be transplanted to America, which lacks the culture and training system?

Alzheimer’s disease, other conditions linked to prion-like proteins

A new theory about disorders that attack the brain and spinal column has received a significant boost from scientists at the School of Medicine. The theory links these conditions to corrupted proteins known as prions, which appear bright green in this image of brain cells from a patient with Alzheimer’s disease.

New I-64/Highway 40 interchanges delayed​

New Interstate 64/Highway 40 interchanges that include an exit at Tower Grove Avenue to access the Washington University Medical Center and a new ramp from Boyle Avenue onto westbound I-64/40 have been delayed until mid-July.

University seeks public comments during reaccreditation process

WUSTL is seeking public comment about the university as part of its reaccreditation process with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. Comments are due by Aug. 21.
